Bringing out unique qualities

St Mary’s University is based in Twickenham, London and, since 2006, Mytton Williams have collaborated with them to develop their visual identity and many other external and internal design assets. Since 2021, I have led the development of their communications, designing across online platforms, in print and in the built environment. Each year, I have helped St Mary’s to develop their recruitment campaign, the university's prospectus and other promotions. This has coincided with other projects, including updating their alumni branding.
Recent recruitment campaigns have built on the vision for the future – a focus on people and place, centred on the campus community. Illustrations have been commissioned to bring alive the community and leafy location, close to the River Thames and London. Students and alumni are at the centre of all communications, sharing their stories and outlining how St Mary’s has helped them to develop as individuals and on their respective career paths.

St Mary’s needed a new identity that would allow them to connect with their alumni. The existing brand felt like an afterthought; it was not distinctive, nor did it feel ownable. Through a series of interviews, I established that the alumni felt their connection to the brand was lost when it was updated in the mid-2000s. They felt a number of superfluous elements had been added to the logo as, before the rebrand, the symbol was just a shield. To address these issues, I removed the additional flourishes surrounding the shield and re-drew it to remove any existing inaccuracies. This symbol was then combined with a custom logotype (based on the typeface Newzald by Klim), including a ligature connecting the ‘y’ and ‘i’.
